A book cover was designed for Stephen Crane's book The Red Badge of Courage keeping in mind the strong themes that are represented throughout the book: patriotism, war, and courage. The soldier used is a scanned photo of an actual civil war soldier at that time. In order to incorporate one of the main theme of this book: injury, the American flag was created by scanning in strips of gauze and then adjusting their coloring as needed.
